ended up dropping my shading and using THREE.MeshStandardMaterial -- i don't have enough time to implement my own PBR
now metals look more like metal, i have the HDR pipeline, and got antialiasing thanks to multisampled render targets. i lost a ton of framerate in exchange 😅
