Thank you Adam. It was my pleasure. Chiswick House is so much in my DNA that it feels like a home from home. As an architectural space it leaves me feeling energised. It is an old friend that I will return to again and again. A place of beauty that never fails to inspire me.

A very fine ivory netsuke by Masanao of Kyoto, carved as an acolyte, or other figure, seated on the back of a recumbent water buffalo, 6cm long, signed in a wavy reserve beneath the right haunch, Masanao. Edo Period, late 18th Century. Ewbank‘ s Auctions, 12 September.

Poor Joseph Gandy died in a private asylum in Plympton, where he had been placed by his family in 1839. For much of his career he had aided the architect Sir John Soane, painting his architectural projects. His paintings were atmospheric and dealt in contrasts of light & darkness

My son’s drawing of the Eiffel Tower to remind us of him when we go away for three nights at the end of this month. I’m looking forward to this little break, my first time abroad with my wife in over 7 years x

Interesting to read that Napoleon Bonaparte was pretty rubbish at Chess, particularly surprising as he was such a brilliant strategist on the battlefield!

A good way of partly identifying early Meissen saucers is to look out for the three centric circles on the rear, often accompanied with a gilders mark in the form of a letter or numbers. Early pieces may have no crossed swords ⚔️

J.M.W. Turner was influenced by a number of artists including the Welsh Arcadian painter, Richard Wilson. When exploring Wales Turner went in search of Wilson’s birth place place at Penegoes in Montgomeryshire. Wilson was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy.
