In his book on @Chiswick_House Gardens, David Jacques suggests that James Gibbs designed the Doric column. He shows that Gibbs designed a similar column at Hartwell House. I agree with this attribution. #JamesGibbs also designed a temple here at Chiswick @Waslet
Here are some images from my hand-painted Meissen porcelain from around 1735 in the tradition of Watteau. They are for a PowerPoint presentation on my collection that I am presently putting together.
Did you know that the five paintings by #GiovanniPaoloPanini that are located in the Great Room at @EHMarbleHill were commissioned by Henrietta Howard and painted in 1738? For many guests they would have been reminders of their #GrandTours. A beautiful set of #capricci.
You may think this is a #Meissen cup & saucer but you would be fooled. It is in fact a Derby cup & saucer, a replacement for a missing or broken Meissen cup and saucer. If is proof that such Meissen services were valuable & deemed worthy of replacements. Very few of these exist.
as the German ‘Watteau’. Nilson had a major influence on decorative arts, especially ceramics. The Months by Nilson was also used on Höchst porcelain by the bird painter Louis-Victor Gerverot (1747-1829)
The artistJean-Antoine Watteau visited Britain at some point between 1718 and 1720 where he met the physician Dr Richard Mead to discuss his Ill health. I wonder if during this time he also was introduced to Lord Burlington whom Mead was also his physician? Problem is from 1719
likely that this saucer was also painted by Louis-Victor Gerverot and formed part of the service. Other known examples here- @CarolineMcCaff @Prints_on_Pots @The_FPSLondon
It’s day number seven of my ceramics Advent Callander ! Today we have a lovely #Höchst saucer, beautifully painted with a lady carrying a basket of fruit on her head. C. 1780.
When we think of the art of Jean-Antoine #Watteau (1684-21) we think of the Fête galante & characters from the Commedia dell'arte. However, in his earlier career he painted soldiers & was influenced by the War of Spanish Succession (1701-14). https://t.co/OJoakT4vq3
