One time I had to do a comm for a friend where there was only one ref, shaded and unecissarily complicated with no swatches whatsoever because whoever made the adoptable wanted suffering.

not sure how you feel about gradients but here is my take? you do not have to keep the spots or pattern on tail or anything but maybe just a more muted purple would work

The right = most recent
The pose is a LOT more fluid and the subtle rainbow gradients in the shading make me drool! Plus look at that mischievous face!!

in some sprites, like the skull, it's essentially treated as a single set piece and hand painted.

the walls are modular- a few different angles of gradients, etc.. they're manually palette swapped and flipped / rotated for variety and for angles of lighting.

Tweaks to outline. Pushed away from camera view a bit to reduce intermodel clipping.

Added a 1-frensel mask to eat away at AO texture just a little bit.

Gradients are from a secondary UV channel with an offset V ramp. Zero Banding!
