DEAD SPACE is, in my opinion, the best horror game on the Xbox360.
It was a really new kind of horror and the mood of the whole game is very unique.

Although Szafran did more traditional cover art - notably for Daphne Du Maurier titles - it's his science fiction work that really stands out as unique. It set an esoteric, somewhat erotic note. Whether the books themselves warranted it is a moot point.

I love plague doctors, so it was pretty much a given that one would be a party member. Originally a green skinned ghoul/zombie, I made her a skeleton girl because I thought it made her more unique. Her sisterhood to Alice was only added later.

On a technical level the game is kind of both awkward and unique. Levels a lot of times are just giant Smacker video files. Sometimes they have transparency. Sometimes they are even layered onto themselves. Scrolling seen in the clip above is pre-baked.

Here's an appreciation post for the work that Nuare Studios did developing the Banished aesthetic in Halo Wars 2. The concept sheets they gave to Blur look so innovative and unique. I hope we see these designs implemented in an FPS someday. 🤩
