@CatSauraGa @Hauntedsock1 @OptimoPrincipi Seriously, though, it's just that most Roman paintings happened to survive from Roman Egypt, but plenty of it also survives from Roman Italy and Roman Greece. For instance, tons of portraits from Pompeii, Herculaneum, Boscoreale, and other sites like the ones seen here:
The majority of well preserved #Roman frescoes were found in #Campania, in the region around the Bay of #Naples. It is here that Mount #Vesuvius erupted in August, 79 A.D., burying much of the countryside, the cities of #Pompeii and #Herculaneum

The restored version of John Martin's Destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
For #worldsparrowday2021 there is an issue with ancient Greek because nobody knows whether "strouthos" mean a sparrow or small ostrich-type bird. So here are two exquisite bits of fresco from Oplontis, the sister town of Pompeii and Herculaneum, instead.
Demeter Peplophoros ΔΗΜΗΤΡΑ ΠΕΠΛΟΦΟΡΟΣ (peplos-long garment, phoros-to wear) Discovered 1997 in ancient city of Herculaneum, near Campania, Italy. Dated 1st CE BC. Greek goddess of agriculture. Aniquarium of Boscoreale, Naples.
Part of a wall-#painting from the #Villa of the Papyri. Four ducks have been hung above two antelope. The antelopes are still alive, and their hooves have been tied. #Hunting is a common themw in the wall-paintings of #Herculaneum and #Pompeii.

@JadeMishu @archaeologyart Hilarious considering these are your average Romans, for instance, in mosaics and paintings from Pompeii, Herculaneum and elsewhere, in some cases depicting contemporary Greeks or past ones like Alexander the Great:
For #FrescoFriday it had to be this as I'm back in the classroom... the fresco of the Centaur Chiron educating the young Achilles, from the Basilica at Herculaneum. I would note that my beard is better than Chiron's.

@GeorgeR63458345 @romanhistory1 You don't see a diversity of skin tones in the statues above? Even Septimius Severus (a half-Punic man) looks reasonably dark toned here. They resemble more or less the general look of Italic Romans in their own frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum, even average modern Italians.
Fresco showing a ceremony of the cult of Isis, possibly a priest performing a dance disguised as the Egyptian god Bes. From Herculaneum 62-79AD. Note the shaven headed priests shaking sistrums and the imported Egyptian ibises sacred to Thoth.
These paintings from #Pompeii, #Herculaneum & #Stabiae remind me of how essential #music & #instruments were for the ancient #Romans, even at home, like we all are now. A kind of @sofarsounds of the #AncientRome ca. 2000 years ago! 😊 #Archaeology #history #sofarsounds
#Roman #music lesson fresco from Herculaneum. A young girl plays the lyre with a young man in attendance arm in arm, on a couch with griffin supports, whilst perhaps her mother (?) looks on approvingly.

Great way to round off 2019 at the @AshmoleanMuseum exhibition #LastSupperinPompeii. Pics include the bronze counterweight from a set of scales, dining room mosaic of death, carbonised walnuts, & a carbonised loaf of bread. All from Pompeii or Herculaneum. #Romans #archaeology

The excavation of the House of the Skeleton was completed by A. Maiuri in 1927. The nymphaeum to the left of the entrance has the back wall covered with lava, imitating opus quadratum and a mosaic covered frieze. A mosaic lararium is also present.#Herculaneum #Roman #Archaeology
