This mythological serpent is an Aztec fire deity and was regarded as the spirit form of Xiuhtecuhtli. Xiuhcoatl is interpreted as the embodiment of the dry season and was the weapon of the sun.

Aztec is a really funky game. I believe it came to the C64 from the Apple II (hence it's character-based graphic gorgeousness), but it's got a messy kinda art style to it that I quite like. Everything has this semi-abstract threatening look to it that creates a feeling of danger.

How come whenever they show Aztecs in a show or movie they are barely clothed in drab scraps and not in the fab full body suits that were brightly colored or animal print? That just screams of ignorance and wanting to believe they weren't extremely sophisticated culturally.

And even earlier mosaic crowns associated with the war serpent which goes back to Teotihuacan. Notably, the Classic period examples here and in the Maya region were also associated with rulership and fire. Similarly, you also have Xiuhcoatl's association with the Aztec crown.
