I always think in big and simple shape. You can always add detail later by giving it a soft shade, blur some part of the hard shade, adding another color, etc

Learning about shape and light source is fundamental for shading!

A classic, but... Brendan from Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald actually has black/brownish hair.
