Today we've chosen this stunning depiction of a Bacchic rite from the Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii - the fifth of seven similar frescoes.

Here a woman kneels before a priestess beside a mynaed or thyiad and a figure holding a thyrsus.

🌚Had to make an icon for Professor Ganon's RateMyProfs entry in a previous comic. This is probably the only time I'll ever draw him (sorry to the Ganon enjoyers out there ^^") but enjoy! He's the big bad evil professor and dean of the Archaeology department! 8/?

☀️Link's first Archaeology expedition with Impa, to the Ancient Mining Facility in the Lanaryu Desert. Magic may be a thing of the past, but it's up to his lab to learn about it! Also, Beedle pops up in the weirdest places. Hope he's ok! 7/?

🆕 People in early medieval Europe kept reopening graves. What was thought to be isolated events, like grave robbing, is actually a regular part of funerary traditions from the 5th – 7th c. AD

This wall painting from the Villa of P. Fannius Synistor dates to c. 50 BCE and depicts a woman holding a shield.

She is likely a seer predicting the birth of a future king, with his image appearing on the shield.

Sable shaping up beautifully. There's much to love, but I think I have a fav: look at the vivid bands of sandstone! Sediment rings of deep time. Sable has everything to do with layers of history, archaeology & strata. The crushed temporal ribbons are a fantastic symbol of that.

For a marvellous wall painting depicting Cupid and Pan fighting while watched by Silenus. The fight between Cupid and Pan is commonly interpreted as the conflict between love and sexual desire.

Holy shit that archaeologist wasn’t lying, that bronze can gong 😳 (thanks for the pokemon suggestion)

Also fun archaeology time, Bronzong is actually based off of Yayoi era Dōtaku. Made of bronze, Dōtaku were bronze bells used for agricultural ceremonies and rites!

Hullo! I'm ama (they/them) and I'm currently living in Japan. I'm a PhD student studying the relationship between local communities and archaeology. I've been supporting myself as a freelance artist creating educational, sequential, and ttrpg-related art.
