Reconstruction of the probably Pictish outpost of Dundurn, Perthshire, by Peter Dennis, and the site today. Perhaps a key stronghold of the Pictish kingdom of Atholl, it was torched in 682. #HillfortsWednesday
Today Banbury hillfort #Dorset is largely inaccessible and damaged by centuries of agricultural attrition. The ramparts survive in places to 2m high and the site still dominates the Stour Valley
It has never been excavated

One of the finest depictions of the #Caburn / #MountCaburn #hillfort #EastSussex is also by one of our favourite artists, Eric Ravilious, a view from his studio in 1935 which, minus the horse-drawn ploughs, is as just as familiar today 🤩
#HillfortsWednesday #Ravilious
The Wrekin Iron Age Hillfort, likely capital of the Cornovii tribe, thought taken by #Roman force c. AD48-50 then abandoned. It is unusual with two separate enclosures. The outer & inner NE entrances are named Hell Gate & Heaven Gate respectively #HillfortsWednesday #Shropshire
Today a small hillfort in the Eifel near Bad Münstereifel, which only covers an area of about half a hectare and is probably unpublished so far. The chronology is therefore completely unclear. #HillfortsWednesday #Archaeology @planlaufterrain
The hillfort in Kreuzweingarten dates back to the first half of the 1st century BC and is associated with the Celtic tribe of the Eburones. Walls and ditches have been excellently preserved, although the ridge was the scene of fierce battles during WW2. #HillfortsWednesday
Not a photogenic site from the air, but our survey of the early medieval hillfort of Dundurn revealed a much more complex system of enclosure than had previously been identified. Excavations in the 70's even produced a leather shoe!! https://t.co/FNDExdk6On #HillfortsWednesday
Extended 2019 data from @EnvAgencyGeomat #LiDAR means more material for #HillfortsWednesday. Now I can see all of the #hillforts / #enclosures in this corner of SE #Dartmoor *and* a bonus mystery ditch! 1/n
2/3 Recorded by us from the air & ground, a terrace/infilled ditch defining the west side of the fort is clearly visible, as are at least 20 hut platforms. https://t.co/YzEiAB7uLN The ridge also has other archaeological treasures for #HillfortsWednesday, 2 further sites! ⤵️
#HillfortsWednesday following @Durotrigesdig post we're staying in Ceredigion with this tiny little gem, Cnwc y Bugail hillfort. One I pass on my run every few days. Here also an aerial from @RC_Survey and reconstruction by @Toby_Driver1 https://t.co/MdyRE9ueTm
