the book seems like a forbidden one that consists of dark spells im not sure tho but if we were to go with the sypolism of the eye it looks like "the eye of providence" which by the rise of Christianity was used as a representation of God’s eye watching over the deeds of humanity

Veles is a Slavic god of nature, dragons, cattle & the underworld. His tree is the willow. After the advent of Christianity, he was split into several characters & identified with the Devil. His more benevolent sides were transformed to several Christian saints.
