Seba’s short tailed bats (like these specimens) are are frugivorous. These bats are widespread across Central and South America, and bats in different regions have very specific feeding patterns depending on fruits available and which other bat species live in the area.
Seaweed collecting was a popular Victorian pastime, with enthusiasts including Queen Victoria and George Eliot. ‘Ocean flowers and their teachings’ (1846) contains pressed seaweed specimens and was perfect for budding phycologists!

The Burnet Moth
I am impatiently waiting for the first #butterflies to emerge whilst working on a project from those less fortunate specimens in cases. Still beautiful!

'Cetiosauriscus greppini' from the Late Jurassic of Switzerland (known from 4 specimens) has been comprehensively redescribed by Daniela Schwarz et al. It's named as the new taxon Amanzia and _might_ be a turiasaur. Another one - they're everywhere now! #sauropods #dinosaurs
The extinct African subspecies of carnivorous horse. Having been wiped out in the early 1800s, this animal is only known today from a small handful of poorly preserved taxidermy specimens.
Have you checked out @adobestock collection of 20 3D insects inspired by specimens available on the Museum's Data Portal? Find out more about https://t.co/NHvBgHNNxF
Some of my other questionable attempts at getting back into 3D include the following specimens:
More misc Beta Unit related doodles. The fish lady is Raziel, she searches the metro and locates "specimens", and the inkling is my Agent 3, he's kinda arrogant and doesn't get on well with the Beta Unit team.
Yet more specimens of disoganised order & organized chaos. 🌀

Quick Equus occidentalis (Western horse) study
based on La Brea specimens
The next two specimens are part of a potential new species of Triceratops. This specimen is not complete, but it is clearly an adult (fused skull), but it is quite diminutive!
Edna L. Beutenmüller created #SciArt for several books on insects, including over 700 for "Field Book of Insects" (1918), based largely on specimens from @AMNH where her husband was curator of entomology. Via @MBLWHOILibrary ➡️ https://t.co/Opmy4qSbNZ

Have you seen our collection of whale skulls on @sketchfab? This #MammalMonday why not check them out? You can rotate them, zoom in and explore the models digitally in a way that would not be possible with the physical specimens. #MondayMotivation https://t.co/27QZ6YdFTm
Don’t forget the #RSPB #BigGardenBirdWatch this weekend! We’ve spotted some rather splendid specimens in an illustrated volume by the 18th century naturalist Pierre Joseph Buchoz.
I'm happy to see that the A. jimmadseni name has finally been formalised. A truly wonderful set of specimens, congrats to Chure & Loewen! On a nostalgic level, it's also nice to see that good ol' "Big Al" has at last been formally assigned to a species! https://t.co/ZUkNeIUnTH
In honor of looking at Trifolium pratense specimens today at the @CarnegieMNH 🤗 #SciArt
While at @ncsuinsects looking up #Cerambycidae specimens for someone, I saw this crazy thing: Tapeina transversifrons (from Panama). Look at that hammerhead! It's ♂️ & I think they're sexually dimorphic. I know of a few other beetles like this...they must butt heads?
When at @NHM_London I always go look at the #birds, the displays are great. Here's a seriema, the two dodo models (models, not taxiderm specimens) and a Cape/Pintado petrel. #museums #museumdisplay
A caricature from Hans Christian Andersen's Little Ida's Flowers by Arthur Rachham (1867-1939) depicting a professor in a top hat talking to two thistles w/ human features. 🌿👜 He holds an open book & carries a green vasculum over his shoulders to store his botanical specimens.
