One of the finest depictions of the #Caburn / #MountCaburn #hillfort #EastSussex is also by one of our favourite artists, Eric Ravilious, a view from his studio in 1935 which, minus the horse-drawn ploughs, is as just as familiar today 🤩

The Wrekin Iron Age Hillfort, likely capital of the Cornovii tribe, thought taken by #Roman force c. AD48-50 then abandoned. It is unusual with two separate enclosures. The outer & inner NE entrances are named Hell Gate & Heaven Gate respectively #HillfortsWednesday #Shropshire
New settlement models from the Iberian Peninsula. From left to right: hillfort of the Castro cultural (village), Hispano-Celtic oppida (town, large town and city) and southern Iberian oppidum (large city).
#hillfortwednesday Eggardon Hill beloved of artists, daydreamers and poets . And sheep.
Not a photogenic site from the air, but our survey of the early medieval hillfort of Dundurn revealed a much more complex system of enclosure than had previously been identified. Excavations in the 70's even produced a leather shoe!! https://t.co/FNDExdk6On #HillfortsWednesday
7 Inside the hillfort, under the sand, a monumental and well preserved stone-built roundhouse 13m in diameter was uncovered, along with finds of late prehistoric and roman date.
Extended 2019 data from @EnvAgencyGeomat #LiDAR means more material for #HillfortsWednesday. Now I can see all of the #hillforts / #enclosures in this corner of SE #Dartmoor *and* a bonus mystery ditch! 1/n
@PaulTubb1 Particular hillfort defences a little more like this local hillfort -

2/3 Recorded by us from the air & ground, a terrace/infilled ditch defining the west side of the fort is clearly visible, as are at least 20 hut platforms. https://t.co/YzEiAB7uLN The ridge also has other archaeological treasures for #HillfortsWednesday, 2 further sites! ⤵️
#HillfortsWednesday Welsh hillforts today are usually peaceful, grassy places forming part of the landscape but in prehistory they were crowded with people and structures & encircled with fresh stone walls. This basic 2015 diagram peels back the grass to show what lies beneath.
I was really surprised that my last tweet about possible hillfort I found reached so much interest. For this week #hillfortswednesday some more #lidar visualisations of the alleged fort.

Some were much bigger like those multivallate forts in Kiełpin.

Something old for #HillfortsWednesday - Samuel Meyrick and Charles Smith's (1815) 'Briton of the Interior' standing in front of what all fans of Scottish hillforts will recognise instantly as the White Caterthun. (1/2)
Had forgotten how much I like the dramatic reconstructions of the late great #AngusMcBride. In this pic a Scot is chased towards a deserted #IronAge #Broch by two Picts NW scotland 7th c AD

A Celtiberian chieftain and warrior break through the Roman siege of #Numantia N Spain in 133 BC - another epic reconstruction by #AngusMcBride (from 1986)

Good time for a retrospective of @johnswogger cartoons about Old Oswestry debacle. 'Who's Standing up for Old Oswestry?' marked 1st Hillfort Hug in 2015 as we fought land allocation near hillfort in #shropshire SAMDev plan. #heritage #planning #engagement #campaign #cartoons
#HillfortsWednesday 2nd tweet about #hillfort Ajdovscina, #Slovenia and final for today (exhausted). On top of the hill, we have the main hillfort. The light blue marked hillfort is harder to see, but its there. I am not sure about that extension - need to see it on the ground.
Thinking about future outings, so I've had a quick look in the #TamarValley and it seems there's plenty to keep me busy - this is just a small section (nr Milton Abbot) for #HillfortsWednesday. Fancied a bit of straight up #cartography this time, so this is all in #QGIS.
We have a trio of Paul Nash paintings for #HillFortsWednesday. Left: 'Wood on the Downs' (Ivinghoe Beacon), oil on canvas, 1930. Right top: 'Maiden Castle', watercolour, red chalk and pencil on paper, early 1940s, and underneath, 'Maiden Castle', no date/materials given.
(5/7) The sequence also reveals the #hillfort abandonment in the 1st c. BC. Was the #romanarmy involved in this process? Since 2017 we have been studying some #romancamps located nearby, but the connection between them and the Late Iron Age site was unclear #HillfortsWednesday
