In the 1870s #Saltaire residents kept pigs past the boathouse by the #LeedsLiverpoolCanal & outbreaks of swine fever led to the village being declared an infected area in the 1890s and 1918. What a good idea of #TitusSalt’s to ban livestock in back yards.

British Pathé has a film of the #RoyalVisit to Salts Mill by George V & Queen Mary #OTD 1918 with shots of crowds at Fox Corner & Victoria Rd. They wrote: “..what a pleasure it was ..to pass through the thickly populated centre of #Shipley & #Saltaire”.

After 20yrs service at #Saltaire Hospital, Matron Mitchell resigned #OTD 17/4/1918 to marry Mr Davison, Manager of Barclays Bank #Shipley. A Christian #feminist, she was also President of the #Bradford Catholic Women’s League.
Police Powerless as Striking Spinners Stone the Manager at #Saltaire Mill in 1894. #TitusSalt & Son went into receivership in 1892 & the firm was taken over by a consortium. Two years later and James Roberts became sole owner of the village & mill.
