Watercolour first so the black background in graphite will go cleaner around it, and make the florals pop a little.
Sometimes it’s better to do the background after, if you’re working with an opaque medium. It can pick the foreground up and make it more lively.

The background of this piece is made up of a lot of subtle changes in value. This makes the background seem like it's being hidden by sheets of rain. But the foreground values are dark on Langstonia, its values clash with those of the background, creating contrast. (4/10)
A painting from 2017 I think?? I really loved this one, but the critique was that it looked too theatrical....but I mean, it's ballet haha.
Obviously would integrate the background and foreground better now, and the rendering could be improved!
