if i'm understanding it correctly it means the specular light becomes offset from the center of diffuse light as the viewing angle approaches a perpendicular angle to the light source (on a round surface)

probably not the best example but i tried to demonstrate it quickly

I've been playing more with the parallax effect (described here: https://t.co/7RfKsI2nXn ) and here's a fun fact: having a negative offset can give off the impression of volumetric effects as long as you don't see the edge of the object!
