It uses Argonaut Software's BRender 3D software renderer. It requires editing autoexec.bat for an environmental variable to run. It's very ugly to look at, and incredibly annoying to play. Developers remove any mention of it from their website in late 1997.

I think the reason I can look past PLA's low graphical fidelity is the fact that the terrain has a semblence of looking like an actual natural environment this time, compared to SwSh's almost totally flat wild area and funnel routes, which look straight up man-made.
