Doing some art to Arapuca, our new Mega Drive game. Hand draw, water colour painting, scan, and them the 16 color pixel art. I take the scan, reduce to 320x224, reduce the colors to 32 colors, then hand picked the palette to reduce to 16, and retouched all adding manual dithering
sometimes if you dither an edited image it hides the blurrier parts
#SailorMoonRedraw I guess I went ahead and did it while I was watching stuff with friends. I wanted to clean up the lines more, add more dithering and anti-aliasing but I really ought to be putting this time into other works of mine

@lorenschmidt these are all very old examples unfortunately, but the principle is the same: a lot of the shadowing between the bricks and the pillars in the first example along with all of the texturing on the central wall on the second example is achieved using these dither patterns. now...

JPG/dither friendly, trained on photos and traditional/digital art, 2x upscale (only nn/bicubic filtering should go beyond 2x imo), looks a bit soft but 'safe', doesn't radically alter the image

did some research and apparently the creator did a VN ver. of this on a couple different platforms? interesting that the art here looks like scanned in illustrations with a dithering filter?

I tried pixel art for the first time two weeks ago and I feel a huge progress has already been made?? Still a lot to turn but so far it's a lot of fun! One day I will crack figure out dithering
@PixelAmbacht Yeah.
This is what I like about the new 8-bit games.. people aren't trying to use all 16 colours on every screen, and dither the colours everywhere. They find a nice simple art style, and it just looks super super cool. 😎
Now in GraphicsGale, click on All Frames -> Color Depth, and choose a low number of colors, depending on the range of your color palette.
In this case I'm going to use a 8 color palette.
You will need to experimentate with this number, and the Dither option.
