Laozi’s symbol is what’s known as a plasma discharge formation.. when charged particles are supercharged within the earth’s atmosphere they form Humanoid esc shapes. Which was also the inspiration for the sun gods-guardians.

It's nowhere near as noticeable in dark corridors, strange alien worlds and spaceships populated with folks of vivid skin colours so most of Guardians looks fine.
But when it's daylight and the Nova Corps and Peter Quill are in frame the green is much more pervasive.
