He was a Polish-born Jew who fled to NYC in 1775. Throughout the Revolutionary War, he would work to finance the American cause.

The British would capture him in 1776, where he would be incarcerated for 18 months. 1/

12 Dec 1776, Congress authorized establishing the 2nd Light Dragoons regiment under Col.Elisha Sheldon, establishing the American mounted arm. The 2nd Continental Light Dragoons would host Washington's intelligence arm under Captain Benjamin Tallmadge.

24 Aug 1776, American Gen Charles Lee informs Congress that Georgia was more valuable than suspected with natural resources & proximity to the West Indies, it must be out of enemy hands. Lee recommends the Continental Army send additional reinforcements.

12 Aug 1776, Gen George Washington writes Gen Charles Lee that the Continental Army's situation had deteriorated due to an outbreak of smallpox & desertions. Washington feared the British navy might blockade NYC, isolating it from other states.

29 Jun 29, 1776, Turtle Gut Inlet NJ Brigantine Nancy carrying gunpowder attacked by 2 British ships. Capt John Barry in frigate Lexington with frigate Wasp sailed in to assist. Barry boarded Nancy & unloaded powder & blasted the enemy boarding party.
