2 exhibitions by 2 fantastically self obsessed artists, Freud and Gauguin . Gauguin's creative range in paint and sculpture and the end-of-career still life portraits he produced, depicting Van Gogh, are profoundly moving. Took my the breath away.

Beep beep. It's Gauguin's birthday. There's a show of his portraits coming to the National Gallery in the autumn. Ooooh! One thing he was REALLY good at was self-portraits. Some of the best IMO. The first one is based on Les Miserables. Gauguin in the Hugh Jackman role!

Now the Marquesan Swamphen P. paepae was described only in 1988 from 600 y/o bones found in French 1902 painting shows this being killed by a dog. has seen it in 1937. It must have become extinct soon afterwards
