Today in 1943, the German battleship Scharnhorst is sunk by the RN off the coast of Norway, during the Battle of North Cape. Canadians served in a number of His Majesty's Ships during the action. HMCS Huron, Haida, and Iroquois, were escorts for Scharnhorst's bait: convoy JW 55B.
1/2 HMCS Fredericton continues to sail towards Trondheim, Norway, under its own propulsion and power and is expected to arrive later this evening. Once alongside, a complete assessment of the damage will be made, and a repair plan will be developed and implemented as required.

#OnThisDay 1911, King George V granted Royal ascent for the Naval Service of Canada (created the previous year) to be known as the Royal Canadian Navy with all warships prefixed with HMCS from this point. The @RoyalCanNavy has strong ties with @RoyalNavy to this day.

Today in 1942, HMCS Oakville, a #RCNavy Flower-class corvette, attacked German sub U-94 with depth charges, guns, and ramming, off the Haitian coast. A boarding party led by SLt Hal Lawrence subdued the crew and rescued survivors before the boat succumbed to her damage, and sunk.
The HMCS Protector 🙌😍 This former naval vessel now serves as a breakwater here at #HeronIsland and is home to an incredible array of marine life!
