The vast majority of Mastertronic disk releases I've seen are in this thread I think. 😁 But that's fine. My memory of Mastertronic releases, back in the day, was watching the burner turbo-loader as they loaded up off of tape. That was part of the Mastertronic experience. 😁

My Favourite C64 Coders No.34

John Darnell

John made a variety of great C64 games. He co-coded Dragon's Lair & Escape From Singe’s Castle for Software Projects & alone made the budget hits Kane/Kane 2 (Mastertronic) as well as Match Day 2 (Ocean) & Star Paws (S.P. again).

Mastertronic were an excellent publisher. It was so easy to spend a couple of quid on one of their games. Sometimes it was a stinker, sure. But sometimes it was something really good. Some of their games got more play than my full-price acquisitions. 👍

My mind went back to a game I played on the C64. A Mastertronic published game simply called "Ninja."
Not only did the gameplay seem quite similar, but the level layout seemed much the same. And wouldn't you know it, it's written by the same software team: "Sculptured Software".

Alcatraz Harry! 😲

Wow that takes me back! 🤔

That moment of getting captured and then facing a firing range and having your head clean blown off! 😬

That kinda thing stays with you man..... 😨

Kikstart 2

Mastertronic

1987

Shaun Southern was the master of the C64 racer & his 4th game on the list (!) is another absolute beauty. Slick presentation, great graphics, an ace track editor and brilliant gameplay. All for under £3?! Shut up!

Really, there were a lot of good Mastertronic games to be had. 👍 I don't remember regretting any of their ones.

Kikstart II

Mastertronic 1987

While the original Kikstart was fun but frustrating, KS2 got everything right. Superb graphics, brilliant fun gameplay (especially in 2 player mode) & an incredible construction kit make for an awesome game.

My Favourite C64 Budget Games No.10

Finders Keepers

Mastertronic 1985

A watershed in budget games, Finders Keepers proved that low prices didn’t have to mean low quality. This early Mastertronic game is a hugely addictive platformer / puzzle game / arcade adventure. Excellent.

Mastertronic 1986

The C64 hosted a dozen or so darts games, but this was easily my favourite. With decent graphics and sound, loads of daft humour and fun gameplay, it really hits the bullseye – especially when played with friends.

Action Biker

Mastertronic 1985

AFAIK this is the only computer game based on a packet of crisps, but I could be wrong. Even Weetabix had its own game in the 80s. Riding around town, collecting items & trying to ride the rollercoaster is top fun.

Like thousands of other 80s kids, I only got a couple of quid pocket money per week, & it took ages to save up for a full-price game. Thankfully, in 1984, Mastertronic & Firebird came to the rescue of skint gamers like me by selling computer games for as little as £1.99. (1/3)
