@shawnelestren No one is advocating face masks to keep the virus away from you. As you say, they aren’t great at that.
Face masks are recommended for keeping -your- aerosolized virus -in-, to protect others. (It travels a much shorter distance when wearing a mask; see photo 1 compared with 2.)

Literally anyone may be an asymptomatic carrier, and coughs or sneezes emit aerosolized viral particles that can remain in the air for 3 hours. Vigilant mask use is a very important tool to limit the *spread*

One can imagine that in similar small, crowded spaces (such as a hospital room or OR), it would be quite easy to stir up aerosols or get caught in an aerosolized cloud. There are anecdotes of this.
In other situations, like an outdoor park, this would be less likely.
