@shawnelestren No one is advocating face masks to keep the virus away from you. As you say, they aren’t great at that.
Face masks are recommended for keeping -your- aerosolized virus -in-, to protect others. (It travels a much shorter distance when wearing a mask; see photo 1 compared with 2.)

Literally anyone may be an asymptomatic carrier, and coughs or sneezes emit aerosolized viral particles that can remain in the air for 3 hours.
