#OnThisDay in 1746, 275 years ago, the Battle of Culloden took place. It was the last battle fought on British soil.
At about 1pm the Jacobite Army opened fire on Hanoverian troops.
In under an hour of battle, about 1,300 were killed and roughly 1,250 were Jacobites.
9 April 1747. The Scottish Jacobite Lord Lovat (Simon Fraser) was beheaded on Tower Hill, London. He was the last man to be executed in this way in Britain. He had been convicted of high treason in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
