Demosthene's anti-Macedonianism brought much grief to Athens
After Alexander died in Babylon he encouraged Athens to revolt from Macedonian rule, but ultimately Antipater defeated the Greeks and imposed harsh conditions on Athens
Demosthenes's committed suicide shortly afterwards
Here are 4 #Roman intaglios - all c2cm in height, dating to 1st-3rd century AD. They show the skills of Roman engravers & are of Demosthenes (Getty Museum), Roman prince (Walters Museum), Roman Man (Met Museum) & Septimius Severus & Julia Domna (Cleveland Museum)
Battle of Sphacteria, 425 BC
A number of Spartans were stranded on the island of Sphacteria. An Athenian force under Cleon and Demosthenes attacked and forced them to surrender (harassing them using bows & spears, whenever they attempted to attack the Athenian hoplites)

One of our favourites - this skilfully engraved #Roman Intaglio (2 × 1.4 × 5 cm) shows Demosthenes, a Greek orator from the 4th Century BC. It is an amethyst & bears the signature of the artist - Dioskourides. Demosthenes was - the Intaglio dates to c25BC, part of @GettyMuseum
