The Akritai used to be border fighters in Anatolia, but evolved into a militia force across the Empire with funding and equipment supplied by the Emperor. They are called upon in troubled spots & to provide security for sporting events - still a source of unrest in the Empire.

Tying the wolf’s mouth was a spell once used by Anatolian communities to protect their missing sheep from wolf attacks. The blade of a knife would be closed and tied, with prayers told over it. This was thought incapacitate the jaws of wolves in the area. (1/2)

In Anatolian fortune-telling tradition, water readings involve inviting djinns, who can reveal the unknown. Tellers tend to be eccentric. If a teller can't be found, a child might be recruited to summon djinns and divine the future from a bowl of water 🧿
