In honor of the #FeastDayofMaryMagdalene & inspired by @pbutterwriter & @PP_Rubens, a thread of images of the Magdalene by #womenartists. This first was posted earlier today by Paula, St. #MaryMagdalene in Penance, by #ElisabettaSirani. Original held at @MBAA_Besancon
It is the feast day of #MaryMagdalene, shown here in a painting by Renaissance artist #ElisabettaSirani. She used to be "the penitent Magdalene", but Pope Francis, taking into account that she was the first person to see the risen Christ, has elevated her status in the Church.
Another female artist I’ve recently discovered is #ElisabettaSirani 🎨 She was an independent painter by 19, and ran her family’s workshop. When her father became incapacitated by gout, she supported her parents, three siblings, and herself through her art.

#ElisabettaSirani realizzava acqueforti tratte dalle sue opere che offriva in dono ai suoi committenti. Era un modo per promuovere e diffondere il suo lavoro! #ArtisteagliUffizi
