This is not in fact entirely true- Zeus seems to be generally depicted as above Fate and certainly the Fates as they are his children! He’s called Moiragetes (the guide of the Moirae). And in Herodotus even Apollo is allowed to dispute their decisions, or delay them.

I kinda buy it, the reference in Herodotus does almost sound like a garbled account passed down from something an old trader might have seen in Mongolia. the griffin in the greek imagination was very much a composite/symbolic animal though... I love Terryl Whitlatch's version
