It’s definitely a relic of the “Acrocanthosaurus as an oversized Megalosaurus” era of palaeoart, with Megalosaurus always being depicted as a nearly neckless hunchback at the time.

These examples by Helen Roney Sattler, Steve Kirk, and Joseph Sibal are good examples.

More spooky and gory because why the heck not? Presenting Atopo-"Fog Horn"-dentatus, Tyranno-"Voorhees"-saurus, Zu-"who ya gonna call?"-ul, and Lemmy-"historic palaeoart was metal enough, no ghosts needed"-suchus.

I used to think to be successful palaeoartist, I need to rigorously stick to skeletal reconstructions. But after becoming an actual palaeontologist, realised they're a huge niche for experimenting with styles & by extension audiences.
