Whenever I do multiple reconstructions of the same prehistoric animal (or group of related animals) I try to find ways to make each one of them a bit different.
Why?
1 its more fun
2 repeat recons confer false confidence
3 change is how #evolution >actually happens<
#paleoart
AYO its #PortfolioDay?!?
I'm Brian Engh, I tell ancient stories.
I'm currently working on a #paleontology /#paleoart #documentary called #JurassicReimagined.
I also paint murals, sculpt life sized creatures, build puppets & make music. I combine #traditionalart & digital.
@Paleosculpts @Orribec While it's true there are no known/living reptiles with facial whiskers (unless you count certain birds) there are a number of snakes and legless lizards where the cranial soft tissues substantially elaborate on the snout and lips, & also for sensory purposes.
@Astro_Fenn In tyrannosaurs (esp t rex) theres a lot of (kinda surprising) thinning of the lower jaw back where you see the MAMLI, MAMP & MAMIPtv inserting in that opening in the alligatorid at the top of the above figure^. That bone thinning in T rex likely means these muscles were massive
Boney things get very very weird when you enter the aquatic realm. Here on land we generally expect big animals to have big thick bones... but a lot if that's because they're on land and have to support their weight.
Giant fish, in contrast, have lots of tiny lil thin bones.
@KGamer1569 The neural spines on the tail - at least what's preserved of them - aren't remarkably different than those of a crocodile, they're just longer than expected relative to the length of the tail & other theropod dinosaurs of similar size.
@elbell98 lol you makin me realize I almost never draw humans. I had to dig to find a few more ancient human character doodles. I should def practice sketching humans more. thank you for the encouragement. 🤙
So many arts to
make, so little time 😩
