Yet another paper of our @AnatRecord Special Issue "The dawn of an Era: Comparative and functional anatomy of Triassic tetrapods" was published today. This time, @tito_aureliano et al. assess the origin of sauropodomorph air sacs. Submissions still open!

To understand how their neck's evolve I'll have to do a full diagram of their skeleton's evolution past the stage shown here! Long answer short similar to how tetrapods evolved a neck but not quite word for word. https://t.co/DGocoo8d7z
🦕This seems a very cool work from Demuth et al. "Modern three-dimensional digital methods for studying locomotor biomechanics in tetrapods"

Cutting through the ocean's surface, Aestulback Drifters have cut out a niche for themselves. Despite their heavy appearance, these Pterosaurs are surface water predators. Ramming right into aquatic tetrapods trying to breath and eating them alive.
ICYMI: The new fish relative #Qikiqtania debuted this week, and despite being cousin to tetrapods, was thoroughly aquatic. You could say it was a bit of a backslider. https://t.co/PWsckCtJv0

Congrats @EvaCHerbst et al on your publication that is getting a lot of Twitter buzz!
"The origin of #terrestrial #locomotion is one of the key transitions in #vertebrate history, but we still do not know how most early #tetrapods moved on land..."

In particular, the scene showing the evolution of vertebrates is especially well done. The screen transitions smoothly and succinctly illustrate the major evolutionary steps from jawless fish to the ancestors of tetrapods. It’s a great example of animation’s endless potential.
And from the vault #specevo iconic future critters the Ocean Flish from TFIW stands remarkable, these constitute a bizarre new radiation of vertebrates from the ocean after tetrapods were wipe out of the face of earth, becoming one of the many recovering animals on 200 m.y.
Tiktaalik spells evolution by @TimDrawsFish
Tiktaalik, a 375-million-year-old fossil, represents the transition of our fishy ancestors into land-dwelling tetrapods. More on #Tiktaalik here: https://t.co/VaFQg9EaFr

so @nemerevermore just announced that “babies in Renaissance paintings look like Permian tetrapods” and I. Hm. Hmmmmm.
In other tetrapods, the openings are either very small or totally absent (the palate is formed entirely by bone; 📷: Witzmann & Werneburg 2017)...but modern frogs and salamanders have these giant palatal openings as well (📷: Eocene frog Thaumastosaurus; Laloy et al. 2013)!

Hi, I am Gabriel and I am a paleoartist and scientific illustrator. I illustrate/reconstruct both extant and extinct animals, particularly tetrapods (although lately I have done quite a lot of invertebrates) 😊
Ocepechelon bouyai; the giant, tube-snouted Protostegid sea turtle from the Late Cretaceous seas of Morocco. The strange rostrum of this reptile is unique among tetrapods, and paleontologists have compared it to the snouts of beaked whales and Pipefish.
