What a pleasure it was to draw by the canal in Utrecht, south of Amsterdam. Boats lazily floated by. Families and friends ate by the water. In this, the first day out of the big city, I noticed how quiet it was, because so many people use bikes instead of cars.

I had the pleasure of teaching an urban watercolour workshop in beautiful Haarlem last week, before the earth turned to molten lava and the fresh air of Northern Europe resembled the mouth of Hades. This is a herring stall, with smart Dutch flags. Wholesome.

Sketched today in happy anticipation of smashing up the oak galls to make traditional ink for a workshop, where I get everyone to try sketching Rembrandt-style, including with goose quills... now how do you turn a feather into a nib again? 🤔
