I am Magic the Gathering artist, also known for my Norse Mythology art book, working 19 years in the industry with various clients (WOTC, Blizzard, Sideshow...).
@MatchaPeaches In the case of mtg/wotc, you need to show initial sketches by a deadline. Personally I like to front-load a lot of my general/big decisions like colour and lighting, so these days I send sketches that I think will describe the final well. Less surprises for the AD
