Ned Osborne was Munnings main model for the hunting scenes he painted in Cornwall.
“ …using him and the horses placed where I wanted them-in a pinewood, on a moor…”
The site for this scene is believed to be Trevelloe Woods near Lamorna.

Grey Horse appreciation post 🤍 🐴
Munnings wrote in his autobiography:“Grey horses were always my delight”

Violet introduced Munnings to Exmoor after they married. In 1920, she bought a cottage at Wootton Courtenay where they would spend time.
Munnings wrote he had “nothing to do except paint and play around”.
Riding out on the moors he captured the landscape & wild Exmoor ponies.
Although a study this painting highlights Munnings’ skill at painting a racehorse. The central horse has a sheen & muscle definition that is second to none.

While ‘Alfred Munnings: The Art of the Poster’ might have closed we share ‘The Squire’s Daughter’ 1901 from @AtkinsonThe
Having been a lithographers’ apprentice for 6 years in the 1890s in Norwich. Munnings created romantic characters in Georgian costume in both print & paint.
This #StudySunday we are in the Unsaddling Enclosure 🐎
The unsaddling enclosure, like the start of the race, was another of Munnings's favourite subjects.
In the studies he experiments with the bright light contrast of the stands, the coat of the horse and shadows.
