There's always a fine line to walk when reconstructing the unknown details of extinct animals in #paleoart, but the more I learn about living animals the more I am convinced that we wouldn't believe _real_ animals were real if we'd only seen them in art. #paleoartprocess
@benjiopteryx @art_of_jimi This is why it's so important to share our #paleoartprocess w/ our collaborators & publicly. People need to see & learn from all the research, measurement, anatomy, comparison & discussion that goes into thorough #paleoart. In good #paleoart there is a story in every detail.
This is actually relatively few #sketches for me to make in order to make a #paleoart illustration, in part because @CrocHolliday gave me great feedback & ideas, which helped evolve the piece from its humble beginnings.
I hope you enjoyed this #paleoartprocess thread.
Then @CrocHolliday suggested we include some crocs so we can show the thermodynamic differences between a #tyrannosaur and their very distant ectothermic relatives (the crocs). So i made these sketches exploring different views showing both of their skull roofs...
Here's a thread of the rough sketches & ideation that went into this #tyrannosaur / #crocodile #thermography #paleoart that @CrocHolliday just announced is in the new edition of Vertebrate Life.
No, I have not had a chance to watch #prehistoricplanet, and no, I was not hired by or affiliated with the production in any way.
That's ok though, I'm currently working on #animation for #JurassicReimagined.
@PPaleoartist @Paleosculpts @lcnwokeji @Tntgames_master @PaleoMiguel1 Pneumatic diverticula between the dorsal processes of dicraeosaurids (& tons of other sauropods) is not speculative at all.
Also, dissect a bird. Diverticula right beneath the skin are all over the place, often for no clear reason (other than maybe streamlining).
