My Favourite C64 Coders No.50

Tony Pomfret

In just two years, Tony put his stamp on the C64 games world by coding six titles for the old breadbin. Hysteria for Software Projects, Mikie for Imagine & Firefly & Hunchback II: Quasimodo's Revenge for Ocean are my three favourites.

Richard Darling

The Darling Brothers made 16 games between them for the C64. Richard was the most prolific and worked on some of the Commie’s best budget titles including BMX Simulator, Pro BMX Simulator, Chiller, Master of Magic & Spellbound.

Marc Dawson

Marc started out at Imagine, making BC Bill in 1984 before moving to Thor in 85 & coding the quirky Stairways. Staying in the Liverpool area, he then worked at Odin where he authored Hypa-Ball & the excellent Mission AD & Robin of the Wood.

Simon Nicol

Simon’s first C64 game was TLL (Tornado Low Level) for Ocean. After that, he made Martech's superb shoot ‘em ups Crazy Comets and Mega Apocalypse before signing off with Back to the Future III for Image Works in 1991.

Robert Steggles

As a kid I was too young & impatient to appreciate adventures but I was always impressed by Magnetic Scrolls' titles. Robert worked on Corruption, Fish, The Pawn & Guild of Thieves, by all accounts, 4 of the 80s greatest adventures.

Happy Dracula day!

The original bloodsucking bad boy inspired numerous C64 games but perhaps the best known is the CRL adventure with its controversial 18 rating. The faint-hearted among you, look away now!

My Fave C64 Software Houses No.7

System 3

Founded in 1982, System 3 didn’t have a C64 hit until International Karate in 86. IK was followed by a run of superb games including Bangkok Nights, IK+, The Last Ninja, Last Ninja 2/3, Tusker, Myth, Vendetta & Turbo Charge. Blimey!

Accolade

Polish, superb graphics, clever touches & fab gameplay are Accolade's hallmarks. Hardball, Killed Until Dead, Law of the West, Apollo 18, PSI-5, Power at Sea, Grand Prix Circuit, The Train. Simply one of the best publishers of the era.

First Star

First Star wasn’t prolific, but they released some of my favourite C64 games. The Spy Vs Spy games are superb (especially 1 & 2) but their crowning glory is the brilliant Boulder Dash – one of the greatest games of the 8-bit era.

Elite

Elite released a fair bit of mediocre software, but when they hit the sweet spot, they certainly delivered. Buggy Boy, Ghosts n Goblins (both ZZAP! Gold Medals) & Ikari Warriors are excellent & Commando, Batty & Airwolf are good fun too.
