My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.7
Barbarian
Palace
1987
Although the sequel was a stunner, I prefer the simpler, fine-tuned, one-on-one combat gameplay of the original. A superb beat 'em up, with great sound, graphics & animation & plenty of humour it’s incredibly playable.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.8
Barbarian II
Palace
1988
This mix of beat ‘em up & arcade adventure is a very slick package that was stunning when first released. Awesome graphics, a tense atmosphere & immediately addictive, gory gameplay made it stand out from the crowd.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.10 1/2
Target Renegade
Imagine
1988
A big improvement on the original with excellent backgrounds, superbly drawn sprites, more varied & enjoyable gameplay, & a miles better control system (joystick only, no clumsy keys!). An excellent brawler.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.11
Championship Wrestling
Epyx
1986
My fave C64 wrestling game, Championship Wrestling is a typically classy Epyx title with superb presentation, loads of smart touches, excellent graphics, lots of humour & engaging & very enjoyable gameplay.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.13
Yie Ar Kung Fu
Imagine
1985
A sound arcade conversion, Yie Ar Kung Fu has nice, colourful graphics & superb music, & with plenty of fast-action gameplay, it's immediately playable. Another quality game from Ocean stalwart Dave Collier.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.14
Knight Games
English Software
1986
A fun diversion from the usual oriental martial arts beat em up, Knight Games has excellent graphics, varied gameplay & a range of events including Quarterstaff, Axeman, Archery, Ball & Chain & Pike Staff.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.16
Uchi Mata
Martech
1986
As far as I know, this is the only C64 judo game, and a pretty good effort it is too. It takes a while to get to grips with it (I’m here all week, folks!), but when you do, it’s very rewarding & great fun.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.17
Bangkok Knights
System 3
1987
Graphically impressive with large, well-animated sprites, BK is a cool-looking fighter. Slick presentation, nice touches of humour, excellent sampled effects & great playability make this a quality beat 'em up.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.19
Rock N Wrestle
Melbourne House
1985
Following Way of the Exploding Fist was always going to be tough. Rock N Wrestle isn’t in the same league as Fist, but it’s a fun game & immediately appealing with lots of daft humour & enjoyable gameplay
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.20
Way of the Tiger
Gremlin
1986
With cool parallax scrolling & an excellent Ben Daglish soundtrack, Way of the Tiger makes a very good 1st impression. The 3 types of combat are a bit samey, but it’s a solid addition to the beat ‘em up genre.
