My Favourite C64 Race Games No.12
Ivan Ironman Stewart's Super Off-Road
Virgin
1990
Smashing & jumping your way around the track & racing mates & the CPU to the finish line in this quasi-3D Super Sprint / Racing Destruction Set mash-up is fantastic fun. Still plays superbly.
My Favourite C64 Race Games No.13
Revs
Firebird
1986
Revs is a serious racing car simulator that requires time & practice before you reap the rewards. Brilliantly presented, and with excellent 3D graphics and engrossing & highly compulsive gameplay, it’s a terrific racer.
My Favourite C64 Race Games No.14
Professional BMX Simulator
Codemasters
1988
This sequel has better graphics, more varied courses, & superb presentation (including ace slo-mo action replays), but the best thing about it is the simultaneous 4 player gameplay. Fantastic fun.
My Favourite #C64 Race Games No.15
Alleykat
Hewson
1986
Some may say that Alleykat is a shooter, but it’s a future sport all about racing, so I’m including it here. Ultra-polished with superb presentation & brilliant graphics, Alleykat is tough but highly rewarding.
My Fave C64 Race Games No.19
Out Run
US Gold
1988
Converting the state-of-the-art arcade game to an 8-bit micro was never going to be easy, yet C64 Out Run is fast & initially good fun. However, the ropey controls & linear gameplay (you can’t pick a route) are disappointing.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.1
IK+
System 3
1987
IK+ has it all. Gorgeous, fluid animation, an awesome Hubbard soundtrack, infectious playability, a wicked sense of humour, fun mini-games & a ground-breaking 3rd fighter adding infinitely more varied gameplay. Outstanding.
My Favourite C64 Beat em ups No.2
Way of the Exploding Fist
Melbourne House
1985
Although later games surpassed it technically, nothing matched the initial wow-factor of Fist. Outrageous in 1985, it was a computer game the likes of which hadn’t been seen before. Magnificent.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.3
The Last Ninja
System 3
1987
Amazing when first released, The Last Ninja is one of the biggest selling games in C64 history. A stunning combination of adventuring, puzzling & fighting, it was original, exciting & totally engrossing. Awesome.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.4
International Karate
System 3
1986
Arguably the best one-on-one fighter on the C64, International Karate is the real deal. Excellent backdrops, silky smooth animation, a perfectly tuned difficulty curve, & a fantastic 2 player experience.
My Favourite C64 Beat ‘em ups No.5
Samurai Warrior: The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo
Firebird
1988
More than just a beat ‘em up, Samurai Warrior is an inventive & absorbing game with excellent graphics, a cool, zen atmosphere & superb, varied gameplay. One of the C64’s best.
