My Favourite Arcade Games of 1985 – No.4

Gauntlet

This 4-player D&D-inspired hack & slash game has cool graphics, nice tunes, fantastic speech, and excellent gameplay. Superbly designed, it’s brilliant fun, especially when played with a couple of friends.

Commando

Not only the biggest selling arcade game of '85, & winner of Coin-op of the Year but also the game that popularised the run & gun shooter. Great graphics, rousing music & fast-paced fierce gameplay make Commando a cracking game.

... rain with a heavy, bulging sack (now, now) for a penny a paper. Atari took the image of the cool US paperboy and delivered (sorry) a suitably cool game with bright graphics, funky tunes, novel gameplay, plenty of humour and an eye-catching handlebars control system.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

With great graphics, loads of samples from the film, and varied and addictive gameplay (a mix of platform and ladders and racing in the mine carts), this is an excellent movie tie-in from Atari.

Marble Madness

Inspired by crazy golf and the artwork by MC Escher, Marble Madness is a trackball-controlled isometric platform/race game. Innovative, addictive & instantly playable, it was a huge hit & sparked dozens of imitators.

Karate Champ

Known in Japan as 空手道 "Way of the Empty Hand" (sounds kinda familiar) Karate Champ was the first hit Kung-Fu arcade game. Massively influential, it triggered a wave of brawlers that entertained gamers for years to come.

Gravitar

Incredibly hard but brilliant, Gravitar went on to inspire loads of games, including the home computer classic Thrust. A game requiring huge amounts of skill and patience, it’s not for the nervous, but it’s bloomin’ brilliant.

Moon Patrol

One of the first videogames with parallax scrolling, Moon Patrol is visually very impressive for 1982. A combination of driving & shooting set in space (ticking all the arcade game boxes there!) it's tricky initially but great fun.

Burger Time

An unusual platformer in which the objective is to build burgers by trampling on the ingredients (these were the days before health & safety & the Food Standards Agency), Burger Time is a daft but charming game that’s great fun.

Phoenix

A shoot ‘em up with superb graphics and animation, Phoenix is also one of the first games with an end-of-level boss battle. With slick controls & superb gameplay, it’s engaging, exciting and much more varied than most early shooters.
