My favourite games of 1989 – No.1

Kick Off

While Kick Off’s graphics and sound are functional, its gameplay is off the scale. The innovative control method makes for fast and furious footy action that’s enormous fun (especially when playing with a friend) & insanely playable.

TV Sports Football

As a huge American Football fan, I was obsessed with this in the late 80s. Presentation is superb, the graphics are brilliant, there’s plenty of humour & the gameplay is a perfect mix of strategy & sports action. Loved it.

A kind of futuristic handball, Speedball is a brilliant concept & an ace game. Slick presentation (you can even bribe the ref!), superb graphics & fast competitive action gameplay make Speedball ultra-playable & incredibly addictive.

Stunt Car Racer

Incredibly imaginative & exhilarating, Stunt Car Racer is like a racing game on a rollercoaster. Speeding around the course, racing your opponent & flying over jumps is enormous fun. Both highly original & immensely playable.

Batman

Sticking with the mini-games format that started with Platoon, Ocean produced another top movie tie-in with Batman. Stunning graphics in Batmobile & Batwing games, cool samples, ace tunes & gripping gameplay make Batman a brilliant game.

Xenon 2

Stunning when first released, Xenon 2 has an amazing Bomb the Bass soundtrack, incredible graphics and an awesome range of weaponry upgrades. Gameplay-wise it’s all about slick, frantic blasting action. You could say it’s a MEGABLAST!

Pac-Mania

One of the first Amiga games I got, Pac-Mania is instantly playable & ultra-enjoyable. Cute graphics, nice full-screen scrolling, fab Ben Daglish tunes, plenty of humour & simple but superb gameplay - it’s a cracking little game.

Rick Dangerous

A trial and error puzzle platformer that requires an ocean of patience and an excellent memory, Rick Dangerous is a game you either love or hate. An affectionate homage to Indiana Jones, it’s annoyingly addictive & a lot of fun.

Super Hang-On

A fab conversion of the arcade game, Super Hang-on is a cracking racer, even without the hydraulics. Crisp, large sprites, fast and effective 3D, excellent controls, and immediately addictive gameplay make this a whole lotta fun.
