RUBEN BRANDT, COLLECTOR: a movie I adore that didn’t get the love it deserved when it was released. I’m still in awe of its visual audacity and its clever repurposing of classic art and cinema. A real wonder of adult-oriented animation. Need to find the time to rewatch it.
SPIRITED AWAY turns 20 today. Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece was released in Japan on July 20, 2001. For nearly 2 decades it was the highest-grossing film ever in the country. In February 2002 it won Berlin’s Golden Bear and opened in the US on September 20. Won the Oscar in 2003.
They are responsible for my love of animation, mythology, and melodrama.

LUCA is now on Disney+ (and at El Capitan if you are in LA). Have I mentioned that I loved it? Maybe, but here is why. Sharing my review for Cartoon Brew once more: https://t.co/E5iJu6Kbvx
Also, the posters are so pretty. I need to get them.
Two recent animated films I love about best friends who are part human and part mythical creatures.
I think I really like movies about mermaids or mermaid-like creatures. These four are all beauties:
-LUCA
-THE LITTLE MERMAID
-PONYO
-LU OVER THE WALL
I truly loved Pixar’s LUCA. It’s the best movie from the studio since COCO and one of my all-time favorites. The way it captures foundational friendships, with their complex emotional nuance, is wondrous. I elaborate in my full review via @cartoonbrew: https://t.co/1yIaN1QTN4
One day I’m going to write a long essay about why BOY AND THE WORLD is the most important animated feature of the last decade.
The American-Chinese animated feature WISH DRAGON, directed by Chris Appelhans, debuts on Netflix on June 11. Excited for this one.
