The X-Men cinematic trilogy had a number of ups and downs but in the eyes of scholar Desmond White the adaptation of Cyclops was definitely a down where the character elements Claremont & others had built up in Cyclops failed to come across on the big screen: #xmen 1/3

The concept also works metaphorically – even relatably. Sometimes building up the courage to pull someone aside and have a hard or emotional conversation with them can actually feel a bit like Storm’s method in a weird way, making it oddly poetic. 4/8

Storm’s goto move for social confrontation is to use hurricane force winds to blast the person she wants to dialogue with a mile into the sky to speak with them. It’s an extreme and unusual character trait, but one with notable impact on characterization. #xmen 1/8

Thinking unapologetically, a lack of consideration for the role of sexual violence against women in Western society might represent a serious point of hypocrisy in terms of UXM’s commitment to progressive representations of women. 9/10

Still at other times, his stories might even become salacious in their representation of sexual violence as part of an elaborate fantasy staging. Again, it depends a lot on the individual scene and the perspective of the individual reader. 7/10

As a writer of a popular mass media narrative, Claremont was certainly in a position to either subvert or contribute to a broad cultural understanding of sexual violence against women (and men, of course, but not nearly so commonly). 4/10

A rape culture is one in which sexual violence is normalized through an extensive series of sociological practices. The term emerges from 2nd wave feminist discourse of the 1970s (a field that Claremont has shown extensive familiarity with). 3/10

Later, it is Lorna who busts them out of prison through an exercise of extreme physical force while Havok cheers her on. Silvestri’s imagery then provides another visual representation of the gender role inversion with Lorna leaning down to kiss a subdued Havok. 9/11
