Dave Cockrum is up for election to the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame this year and, given our area of focus (by which I mean ‘our bias’) I wanted to make a case for his selection amidst a highly competitive pool of nominees. #xmen 1/5
In trying to talk Storm down, Jean reveals that she too is plagued by a personal weakness and a heavy burden (her uncontrolled telepathy). She assures Ororo that they are friends and Ororo comes back to her senses. 6/8
@FairbankOtts I really liked Rogue as a tiny powerhouse. That was really fun visually when she's punching out giant muscle-dudes...or walnuts for that matter.
This aspect stays the same throughout the run, as does Rogue’s occupation of a traditionally male role on the team (powerhouse brawler), but it’s interesting to consider how and why the character might have shed these queer signifiers over the course of C’s time on the book. 7/7
Either way, through Anodyne, Madelyne is given a prominent role in the story and showcases a number of the elements and attributes that would later make her an even more compelling character in the years to come, right up to the point of her ultimate tragedy. 10/10
The timing here is interesting as it’s in this same 2 issue series that Madelyne’s pregnancy is first announced. Where something like that holds the potential to overdetermine Madelyne within a nurturer role, we instead get something more complicated. 2/10
The so-called “class of 86” or “The Big Three” narrative has been much-mythologized in popular media, and since comics were eager for cultural validation, the entire industry sort of went along with this grossly simplified narrative of how comics matured in the 80s. 2/6
Again, none of this is to say that Kitty/Piotr is a good idea, especially given some of the tropes that emerge from it, but when we take Kitty’s perspective on the romance we see a tale of adolescent wish-fulfillment that is rarely portrayed from a young woman’s perspective. 9/9
One notable exception is when Kitty attempts to seduce Piotr and he refuses her, noting that it would not be right. Of course, Piotr cheating and thus ending the relationship is another example, but that was the work of a different writer. 8/9
