"The walls of my castle are broken; the shadows are many, and the wind breathes cold through the broken battlements and casements. I love the shade and the shadow, and would be alone with my thoughts when I may."

Heinrich Lefler was born 1863. The first image, from his Mozart: Zwölf Gedichte (Twelve Poems, 1914), puts me in mind of a scene from just about any novel I've ever read.

“The very thing which I want to live most for will be a great occasion of my death…I wish for death every day and night...and then I wish death away, for death would destroy even those pains which are better than nothing."

—John Keats, 30 September 1820

"I must stay alone and know that I am alone to contemplate and feel nature in full ... I have to merge with my clouds and rocks in order to be what I am. Solitude is indispensable for my dialogue with nature."

—Caspar David Friedrich, died 1840

Is not this the witching time of night? The waters murmur, and fall with more than mortal music, and spirits of peace walk abroad to calm the agitated breast. Eternity is in these moments.
