"The walls of my castle are broken; the shadows are many, and the wind breathes cold through the broken battlements and casements. I love the shade and the shadow, and would be alone with my thoughts when I may."

Heinrich Lefler was born #OTD 1863. The first image, from his Mozart: Zwölf Gedichte (Twelve Poems, 1914), puts me in mind of a scene from just about any #Gothic novel I've ever read.

It’s been a miserable year for us all, but for me today marks the true beginning of the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” and I want to wish all my friends a Happy Halloween and, most importantly of all, a Happy Birthday to my dear John Keats 🎃😈

For #FolkloreThursday before Halloween, here are a few illustrations by Arthur Rackham from The Ingoldsby Legends which is a collection of ghost stories, myths & legends. They were written mostly as pastiches of medieval folklore & poetry.

"The dark and tattered draperies...rustled uneasily about the decorations of the bed...An irrepressible tremor gradually pervaded my frame; and, at length, there sat upon my very heart an incubus of utterly causeless alarm."
—Edgar Allan Poe, died #OTD 1849

“The very thing which I want to live most for will be a great occasion of my death…I wish for death every day and night...and then I wish death away, for death would destroy even those pains which are better than nothing."
—John Keats, 30 September 1820

@sameoldghost I absolutely do 😈 I was about to post a comment with names of artists, but that particular one is by Arnold Böcklin—one of my favorites. I also love his Isle of the Dead and Villa by the Sea.
The Cheval Gauvin is an evil horse that haunts eastern France & the Jura Mountains of Switzerland. According to legend, it is a harbinger of death that is found in forests & cemeteries and kills those who ride it by drowning or tossing them off into chasms.

"I must stay alone and know that I am alone to contemplate and feel nature in full ... I have to merge with my clouds and rocks in order to be what I am. Solitude is indispensable for my dialogue with nature."
—Caspar David Friedrich, died #OTD 1840

Is not this the witching time of night? The waters murmur, and fall with more than mortal music, and spirits of peace walk abroad to calm the agitated breast. Eternity is in these moments.
