A tall, muscled, black-haired warrior slays a man with a huge axe and seeks left and right for his next adversary; the red-haired attackers break and flee.

A name rings out over the battlefield; the warrior turns to see a blood-splashed woman standing atop a low hill...

But, it isn’t your daddy’s “hero’s journey” either. It’s your grandfather’s pulp adventure.

It isn’t neat or tidy. It’s personal and honest and messy; it's what pulps were.

Fast forward 20 years to the very same tale where Conan 1st mentions the possibility of being a king. Howard writes “The Cimmerian might have spent years among the great cities of the world; he might have walked with the rulers of civilization...But he was no less a barbarian.

...to illustrate how barbarism is superior to civilization. The message is just writ large in those tales, on an imperial scale, by having the Aquilonian people prefer a Celtic King’s methods over the traditional, feudal, “civilized” rulers.

This brings us to the key question:

Certainly, Frost Giant’s Daughter is very fantastic, mostly taking place in a supernatural realm. But other stories written at the same time as King Conan are already more practical; God in the Bowl and Tower of the Elephant show no signs of any “Celtic” themes.

...and is, in turn, saved by priests of the god Asura. They tell of a mystic jewel that can defeat the sorcerer Xaltoltun of ancient Acheron. The jewel’s name is The Heart of Ahriman. It was removed from a hidden cavern below Tarantia and taken out of the kingdom.
