#217 Ibaraki-douji

Some stories have Ibaraki-douji as a male oni & second in command to Shuten-douji, and others have her as female, sometimes even Shuten’s wife! There are multiple accounts of her retrieving her arm from Tsuna, & it was a popular subject in literature & plays.

Summer Jeanne’s somewhat terrifying companion is a dolphin (later shark) named Reece (later Reece XP) is a reference to the Japanese Microsoft Word equivalent to Clippy, a dolphin named Kairu. This is alluded to the fact that Reece wants to “delete you”.

Another name for Skadi is Öndurguð, which means “ski god” in old Norse. One etymology theory regarding her name is that the original form of “Scandinavia” means “Skadi’s Island”. It could also mean “harm” and is a cognate with the English “scathe”.

Sigurd cannot be easily attested to a historical figure much like his German counterpart Siegfried. It is possible he is based off of Sigebert I, who married a princess named Brunhilda. Much of his reign was embroiled in a civil war against his half-brother.
