Chapter 223 Trivia

The final chapter of 2021! This time last year, Senku and the others were crossing the Andes and Suika almost died falling into a canyon.

Unlike modern net launchers, this one fires like a rocket launcher, with a bullet that splits apart to expose the net. This is probably because net will be destroyed in the explosion (thus not reusable), and packing both a net and grenades together properly is delicate work.

This reconnaissance satellite is probably based off the first weather satellite, TIROS-1. It was built by NASA to see if satellites could be useful for studying Earth, especially in the case of natural disasters such as hurricanes.

The first photovoltaic cells were layered brass/gold/selenium, created by Charles Fritts in 1885. Senku upgraded his with a layer of glass coated in magnesium fluoride, which prevents the sunlight "escaping", thus converting more of it to electricity. They're about 1% efficient.

There's now a third boat donning the "Perseus" name: Perseus D. Monkey. This one is heavily inspired by One Piece (OP), specifically the protagonist Monkey D. Luffy. The head of the ship is painted like a monkey: a reference to OP, the steam gorilla, and the old Perseus design.

There's a sneaky rat (or mouse?) on the cover! Unfortunately I have zero idea what this could be alluding to. It could be nothing, or it could be implying that Ukyo (same colors) is the t(ra)i(t)or...

The inside of Xeno's scar is also colored white! New petri-scar theories?

The medusa sits on a fabric bed with a glass dome on top (Beauty and the Beast anyone?), attached to a vacuum pump that we see removing the air from inside. This will probably need to be periodically turned on to keep the vacuum state, since the seal isn't perfect.

Kenjiro Takayanagi of Shizuoka University is considered one of the main pioneers of television, succeeding in displaying the character イ (i) on his Braun tube display in Dec 1926. Over the next few years, he improved the image allowing more detailed images such as human faces.
