More than half the commercial games library is non-eroge. Plenty of less than horny games had gorgeous art, too, like anything from Glodia, Micro Cabin, Koei, and Falcom among others.

Yeah, lotsa booba on the system, but none of these games ever had a monopoly on PC-98 Aesthetic

Eagle eyed viewers might have noticed the illustrator here: Mutsumi Inomata, iconic artist behind various anime (Leda, Windaria) and plenty of game works, especially the Tales of series (Destiny, Berseria, etc.)

She later did character designs & promo art for Koei's EMIT trilogy

Comic ad for Square's Alpha from LOGiN Magazine, Aug '86

A classic J-PC adventure, Alpha was prized for its lush science fantasy art. Its release paired well with Cruise Chaster Blassty & King's Knight.

Ad in Oh! X Magazine Dec. '93 for Z-MUSIC, an X68000 audio suite which found use across the PC's software library.

Beyond composing & arranging tools, Z-MUSIC also provided sound drivers & other middleware for games both amateur & commercial. It was a staple of X68k doujin soft.

Though Ys would eventually become far better-known, Falcom hit the paydirt with Sorcerian. It was their other flagship franchise for a good few years, buoying the company during its turbulent employee exodus following Ys III.

Many ports & remakes later, it's still relevant!

This video thread's only the first of many I'll be doing for Kotori Yoshimura's works over the years, let alone the longer YT/website videos I have planned.

She's as much a great developer as she was a leader both at Tecno Soft & Arsys, a legacy that's been unjustly overlooked.

I plan to eventually cover their 1993 PC-98 polygonal SRPG Desert Dragoon (デザートドラグーン). Its stylish aesthetic & depth of play ought to speak for itself!

Until then, I'm very invested in the original Melty Lancer despite its rough edges. The game loop is simply that good.

Experienced animator Yasuhisa Kato (Yu Yu Hakasho, Azumanga Daioh) provided art direction & character designs for the PC-98 original & much of the series afterward.

I'd like to track down & catalog more of these series books/guides/etc., but it's quite the rabbit hole.

The half-human, half-mythical beast solider Angela, for instance, excels at physical & battle tasks, but her shyness & lack of street smarts make either the priestly Sakuya or the professional Sylvia a better fit for those missions.

Regardless, be careful not to overwork anyone.

As you might guess, this "prologue to the evolution of the next generation character rearing SLG" had lofty ambitions,

Tenky had previously worked on such games like Graduation 2 for PC-98, so Melty Lancer had expectations to match up to. I'd say they succeeded & then some.
