New video thread arrives in two hours. Let's just say it'll be a magical girls' night out.

The PC-6(6)00 series saw more graphic text adventures over time, such as NEC's own Colony Odyssey, which had voice synthesis & a story from Japan's sci-fi scribe Sakyo Komatsu.

A lot of players stuck to more arcade-style software, however. Those were still easier to play & make.

Unlike 46 Okunen Monogatari, Mercury got a 1991 PC-98 sequel but no console version/remake. I wish I had any sales data.

Maxima lasted until around 1993 when they released one last JRPG, Legend of Shalice, a much more conventional take on the genre at least in its presentation.

While the X86k port runs a tad smoother, adds a couple small options, and adds both new music & opening cinematics, the PC-98 original's just as playable, more so if you want to use text hooking for reading or machine translation

It's also unlikely the game did very well on X68k

Moving with mouse can be a little jank due to how the game's renderer works, so I recommend using numpad keys if you have them. Menus are simple & easy to navigate, though, as is the battle system.

It goes without saying, but Mercury looks especially cute & pristine at 640x400!

Regardless, you can play Advanced Dogiemon today on a real/emulated PC-98 by getting the doujin/homebrew ZIP archive from Neo Kobe (look for Circle Mitei): https://t.co/ucGvW1QHck

I recommend lowering the CPU speed a lot (or setting the game's "wait" option to max). Game's fast!

This was soon proven false by Falcom's own Ys V for Super Famicom, but Hudson held none too small an influence on the brand in the early-1990s.

It makes Dogiemon's mid-'80s leanings more understandable beyond it simply being easier to make than a full-featured action RPG.

The biggest irony here is how much more this resembles a classic Hudson Soft puzzler—not even just their famous version of Lode Runner—than it does anything Falcom had made.

Perhaps Hudson's many Ys games for PC Engine CD had made them the series' inheritors in some fans' eyes?

The developer, Circle Mitei, fits the image of many similar PC-X8 fan groups, making either games or CG galleries for the doujin market. If anything, appropriating one of Japanese PC gaming's best-known franchises saved them from obscurity, even if the game's not as remarkable.

Shout outs to The Sims 2: Castaway (& Castaway Stories) for trying the big-budget approach & not falling too flat.

I do pine for another cute, challenging, idiosyncratic survival sim to inherit what Mujintou Monogatari pioneered & refined in relative obscurity. Dreams are nice!
